Design Secrets for Large Scale Printing Success – Part 1

Whether you’re designing banners, signs or posters, it’s important that your large-scale printing project stands out form the crowd for all the right reasons.  While the first step towards success is to ensure that you’ve entrusted your project to a reputable printing partner it helps to know some of the basic design secrets that will get you on the right track.

In this two-part post, we’ll look at six design secrets that will help you overcome some of the most common challenges to large scale format printing success.

Choose your fonts wisely

Most large-scale print formats are meant to be read from a distance which means you need to select fonts that not only look good but have good readability. As a rule of thumb avoid fonts that are too bold, too thin or crowd the letters together. To get it right try taking a few steps back from your PC and reading the text, better yet ask someone else who is not familiar with it to do so. Colour is key

Always ensure that the colours you’ve selected work well together and that the background colour contrasts nicely with the colour of the text and graphic elements. For banners and signs that will be read on the run try and stick to a smaller colour palette of around two to three colours. For something your audience will have time to stop and read you can get a little more creative by adding more colours to the mix.

Maintain balance

The point of your printed collateral, whether it’s a banner, sign or poster, is to grab people’s attention quickly. To do this you need to maintain a balance between colours, graphics and fonts. A poster that is too cluttered will not be absorbed quickly because people will have a hard time making sense of anything on it while one that is too sparse wont grab people’s attention at all.
